Day 1: Friday October 21st

Journey to Ohio and Gathering the Troops

My AoS-fest3 began in Phoenix, Arizona with my alarm going off around 3:45 am. I am out in Phoenix on yet another project and decided to stay out there versus flying home and then flying out to Ohio for AoS-fest 3. My flight was at 5:20 am….ugggg. I was jazzed up for the trip though, so I slept very little the night before. I made my flight, connected through Houston and got into Columbus, Ohio around 2pm. Another skater and good friend, Jay Salillas, from Birmingham was also flying up and was suppose to be in around 1:45. However, he had missed the flight and was coming in later in the afternoon around 4 pm. Another skater, Mike “ShackleMeNot” Callahan drove over from Chicago to make yet another AoS-fest (he had made it last year in Nashville), and he was meeting us at the airport. Right as planned, Mike was there waiting. We decided to find the hotel and check in while waiting on Jay to arrive. I got my rental car and made my way to our hotel. AS predicted, it was cold and raining…not just rain but the kind of rain that sets in for hours. Good thing we made those rain plans! Traveling so much with my job has it’s perks. I got a room at the Renaissance hotel right in the heart of downtown Columbus for free for the weekend using my Marriott points! Mike and I found it fairly easily, checked us all in and headed back towards the airport.
Jay got in right around 4 pm. We were all hungry, so we hit a McDonald’s right outside the airport. It was some kind of new fangled McDonald’s. I haven’t eaten at a McDonald’s in probably 2-3 years, but Jay noticed it right away. It was all decorated like some kind of fancy lounge or something inside. Nice tables…a little sitting area with contemporary sofas and tables…various earth tone colors on walls and wood panels here and there…..but still, just fast food at the end of the day. It really hit the spot! The Ohio guys, Rob Behler, had planned a big cookout at one of their homes that night, so we did not eat a whole lot.
