WOODY TREND
Woody Trend is an Atlanta local, long time skater and artist whose work was recently featured on the cover of Concrete Wave's
annual buyer's guide (get yours while you still can!!!). Woody works with several mediums but is most known for his intricate mosaics of glass.
The deck mosaic "Fennessey" shown in the image is Woody’s tribute to local Atlanta vert pro, Ray Fennessey. It is the first in a series entitled "Legends of
Skateboarding" which so far has included 3 decks with many more to come (Another deck in the series is a famous shot of Chris Miller!). If you are interested in Woody's art work and would like
to contact him, he can be reached at woodytrend@hotmail.com and found HERE on MySpace.com where you can view more of his great work. Really killer art!

R.I.P. Ray Underhill
(
source Wighat / Skull and Bones
)
|
|
Ray turned pro for Powell Peralta during the 1980s, earned his own model, and traveled the world for contests and demos. He eventually married, had two children, and settled in North Carolina, where he worked for Eastern Skateboard Supply as a graphic artist. Last year Ray was diagnosed with a chordoma brain tumor. He's undergone surgeries and battled back from paralyzed vocal cords and other complications. Since January, Ray had a few MRI's with continuous tumor growth. After consulting with an oncologist, Ray was placed on 2 different oral chemo medications without success. He was taking an IV chemo once a week up at Duke with hopes that this would slow down the tumor growth. On top of fighting the battle with the nasty tumor, Ray experienced several bouts with aspiration pneumonia and was recently hospitalized with blood clots in his lungs but told the doctor he needed to be released in time for Keaton's 13th birthday. Unfortunately for all of us he couldn't fight any longer. Ray Underhill passed away on the morning of August 1st. He was so much more than just a much beloved pro skater. He was husband to Kerry, father to Keaton and Olivia...and a great guy all around. As Buddy Carr said about him "In all my years of knowing Ray, I never heard that guy utter a negative word about anyone.". Ray will be greatly missed. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family and friends.

The 2nd Annual Pat Wachter Bowl contest was May 3rd and another big success. However, all of May and June I was wrapping up work on a project with my *real* job. Recently, I have been wrapped up with a home improvement project. So I guess what I am saying is, I have been busy! But no excuses! I finished up the article on the event, and it is now available under the COMMUNITY area. Go check it out and enjoy!

Cliver limited edition decks for Supreme
(
source AoS
)
|
|
It's like Supreme just started printing money! They asked Sean Cliver many months back to do two decks in the spirit of his early days at World Industries (ie. graphics to piss people off). Cliver produced the goods, and now, they are the hottest, most-wanted decks around. I have only seen photos of them, and from what I saw, they are definitely "must haves". I talked to Sean the other day, and he said it felt great to get back in that old mindset and do them. The two decks are called "Dick and Jane" which features two kids sacrificing a baby on the den floor in front of their parents and "Halloween" which features children dressed in various controversial costumes such as Hitler, KKK, Jesus, etc. Each deck had a corresponding t-shirt as well. Per Supreme, "This summer Supreme will produce a series of two skateboards with original artwork done by Sean Cliver for Supreme and two original t-shirt designs to coincide with the project release. Available at the NY/LA stores and online on June 12th. Available in Japan stores on June 14th." Past that, no one has seen them first hand. Hell, even Sean doesn't even have them yet! Keep an eye out for these and get them if you can! Check them out over at Supreme.

2nd Annual Pat Wachter Bowl Contest is a success!
(
source AoS
)
|
|
May 3rd was the 2nd annual Pat Wachter Bowl contest in Alabama, and once again, ArtofSkateboarding.com was one of the sponsors. This year, the venue changed temporarily as Florence, Alabama breaks ground on a new skatepark to host the event in the future. Last year's pro event was held in Alabaster, Alabama, but that city backed out on this year's contest. This forced organizers to find a new temporary location at Insanity Skate Park in Madison, AL, and par back the contest to an "amateur only" event. The contest,however, was a big success! Guest judge, Creature's Steven Reeves, did a great job and visiting Bacon skaters, Kevin Kowalski and Frank Faria, tore up the every bit of the park! Next year's event will be a return to a PRO/AM contest, and I can't wait! Stay tuned for a full article and photos from this year's Pat Wachter 2 contest coming soon!

Is it Happy Hour yet?
(
source AoS
)
|
|
I have heard rumors latley of a new skateboard company set to launch very soon called "Happy Hour", so named because most of us older guys don't get a chance to skate till after work...ie. happy hour! The company is out of Atlanta, and initially, the team will feature many of Atlanta's legendary skaters, both new and old, including Shawn Coffman, Jimmy O'Brien, Don Hillsman, Ray Fennessey, and more. If rumors are true, this could be one very cool new company to keep an eye on. More news as it comes...until then, enjoy your Happy Hour. *grin*
