Day 1: Thursday December 7th

Pre-AoS-Fest

Thursday evening, the first group of AoS-sters was set to arrive. They were all friends from my own hometown of Birmingham, Alabama that I skate with regularly. I had finally convinced them to come out west and visit. Seeing as that it was in the 40’s for the daytime highs and low 20’s for the lows at home, it wasn’t a tough sell. After work on Thursday, I headed to the airport and traded in my rental car for a rental mini-van…more room for the crew. I waited around for about 30 minutes or so for my friends to arrive. Around 8pm, I hear a ruckus at the top of the escalator and sure enough…down comes 4 skaters and all their gear. Patrick Jackson, Jay Salillias, Kerry Johnson and Butch White had made the trip. We exchanged out greetings and got underway in the van, or as it would be known "Old Blue".
From the rental center, we headed a short ways over to the hotel to get everyone checked in. A nice perk of traveling so much is that I get lots of "points" to use, so I hooked them up with some free rooms on me. What are friends for, right? (haha) Rooms situated and bags unpacked, we were off to dinner. I wanted to take them some where that they could not find at home…some where fun too. We went to the Tilted Kilt. For those that do not know the place, imagine Hooters but in a Scottish pub. The place is like a big sports bar pub….dark wood atmosphere, ridiculously big big screen tvs, lots of different beers from across the world, hearty unhealthy food…and best of all, waitresses that wear short skirt kilts and tied-up blouses. Woo whoo! We all loved the place! (*I highly recommend the garlic fries). Our waitress Mandi (yes, with an "i") was great and got a picture with us. After dinner, we stopped by the Tempe park to check it out since it was right around the corner. I wanted to tease the guys a bit with what tomorrow would bring. They were all stoked on the park. Seeing as how we had to get an early start, we headed back to the hotel and called it a night.
